This week’s picture of the week can be found in Mexico City’s Angel de la Independencia. It is the statue representing La Paz de la Suroriente, at the bottom of the statue.
The Angel de la Independencia is a very popular monument and well known in Mexico. All my people who watch telenovelas know that every episode starts with a clip of the Angel de la Independencia. The original Angel de la Independencia was built in 1910 to commemorate 100 years of Mexico’s freedom from the Spaniards. But in 1957 it suffered damage due to an earthquake. It is located in the famous, Paseo de la Reforma and a cool fact, at the bottom of el Angel is a tiny mausoleum where the remains of important generals, such as: Juan Aldama, Don Nicolas, Ignacio Allende, Miguel Hidalgo amongst others are buried. These generals were active during the fight for independence!
